I've always enjoyed inspirational, biblical, and theological writing. Now I don't have to wait for publishers
to respond; nope--now I just have to wait for the grade!

Summer 2008
Study Tour of the Holy Land
Before we went on tour, we completed five site summaries. I studied the Church of the Nativity, En Gedi, Qumran, Cappernaum,
and Sepphoris. As it turned out, the sites I'd studied in advance were the sites I enjoyed the most. I made a note to self:
study the places you plan to visit--you'll have more fun.
I also kept a journal while I was there. When I returned home, I edited it and added pictures from the trip. WARNING:
This is a huge, huge file. It may take a while to download.

Changing Face of Baptists
Intro to Old Testament II
Intro to Preaching
Intro to Theological Education and Ministry
For my class "The Changing Face of Baptists," I had to read three books and write
my response to those books, including two-four questions the books raised in my mind. You may not agree with these
responses, so read at your own risk. I loved writing these papers. The books were each fascinating in different ways to me
and I learned so much reading them. I have five more papers to write for this independent study class.

My next assignment for this class was to write a response to the New Baptist Covenant Celebration that was held in Atlanta
in January. Basically, I was to write my impressions of the event, especially as it related to my previous experiences as
a Baptist.

Next, I was assigned a similar paper to the last one. Here's what I was to do:
Each student is required to submit a 10-12 page double-spaced paper that includes the following:
a. Student’s response to specific issues addressed throughout the conference.
b. Student’s focus on subjects discussed in plenary and breakout sessions.
c. Student’s own vision for shaping Baptist identity in the 21 st
century as related to the student’s particular focus at the conference (justice, poverty,
diversity, “captives,” and “strangers”).

My major assignment for this class was a research paper, 15-20 pages in length. Here're the directions:
The paper is intended to give students the opportunity to focus attention on a specific area of interest
related to Baptist life in the context of a more general course. The involvement in the "gathering" should provide many possible
options for exploration. Students should feel free to explore a variety of topics and are encouraged to prepare studies which
might be suitable for publication. These possible topics include, but are not limited to, aspects of the life and thought
of particular individuals who are important to Baptist identity, questions of ecclesiology, documents, specific doctrinal
or practical issues, or particular Baptist movements.
So just guess what topic I chose? What topic have I been troubled by ever since fourth grade when I read all
the books in the library on Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, and Abraham Lincoln? That's right, the fact that people
who don't look like each other just don't seem to get along--much less worship together. . .

Intro to Preaching
My preaching prof, Dr. Danny West, in his normal Sunday morning preaching attire. No wait,
this is a picture from our trip to the Holy Land when he had to wear this sarong to cover his legs, so as not to distract
other worshippers at the chapel of Dominus Flavius. The sarong on the doc is of course not one bit distracting. If it were
another color, maybe, but the pink is so subtle.

In my first assignment, I wrote about the preacher who most influenced me. Can you guess who I chose?

We were required to critique a movie from a theological viewpoint. I chose The Bucket List. If you haven't seen
it. . .it's out on DVD. Well? Go get it. You'll love it.
But wait to read my paper until after you see it. . .unless you don't mind having everything in the movie revealed to
you in advance.

In preaching class, I had to "preach" to my classmates. The text I chose was Psalm 22--the same text I used for my exposition.
If you read that, this is a bit different. The sermon is written to be spoken, not read, and the exposition is written to
be read by professorial types, not folk like me. So, if you haven't read either, pick one. If you're a bookish bloke, go for
the exposition. If you are Sunday morning sermon junkie, go for this one. Better yet, go to http://www.fbca.net/sermons.asp and listen to my pastor, Guy Sayles preach. Yeah. Do that.

Introduction to Old Testament II
Okay, so it's a bit of a stretch to connect this Veggie pic to my paper on Psalm 22. So warm up, put on
your sweats, and get ready for a little mental yoga. Ready? OK. Reach back in to the united monarchy and snatch up the naughty
little monarch who, thankfully, has a heart for God. Got him? Yep, David. This Veggie-Ditty is about David and the Bathsheba
scandal. It's cleaned up a bit (pardon the pun--that is, if you've already seen it, and you get the bathtub reference)--but
follows the story remarkably closely. Anywho, so David is later attributed with the writing of this Psalm--the one I'm writing about
for my OT II paper. Fits together nicely and neatly doesn't it? And how many mental calories did you burn working all
that out, huh? Good for you.

Every seminarian is supposed to take ITEM (Intro to Theological Education and Ministry)
in their first semester at Gardner-Webb. My first assignment in this class was to write a spiritual autobiography. What a
soul-searcher that was! The professor gave me a 98, though, so I guess it was worth it. (Don't let the "autobiography" part
scare you--it's not all that long. . .)
